It makes you feel undervalued and unappreciated, and can taint your entire experience of a company. And not only is this totally unfair – it’s illegal. Unlike the gender pay gap (which is a separate, albeit related issue), equal pay is already enshrined in law, and has been for almost half a century – since the Equal Pay Act was first passed in 1970. If your employer is paying you less than a man for doing the same, or an equivalent job, then they are already breaking the law. However, for many employees taking legal action doesn’t really feel like an option. You may not be in a position to leave your job – and nothing makes the office feel quite as awkward as suing your boss. If you’re happy to hand in your notice, you may work in an industry in which the networks are so small that you fear being known as ‘the person who sued her employer’. And on top of this, there is the obvious obstacle that can stand in the way of so many legitimate lawsuits – legal fees. But there is nothing to stop you from bringing a complaint directly to your boss first – then, down the line, you may feel in a position to consider legal action. So put aside the temptation to keep quiet for an easy life, and figure out how you’re going to deal with this injustice head-on.
